World War D: All Natural Deodorants Battle it Out

In today’s post, I get to combine two of my favorite things in the world: all natural deodorants and zombies. What in the world do these have in common, you ask? At first it doesn’t seem like they relate at all! But upon further inspection we find…..THIS!

Do Zombies Have B.O?

If you haven’t been living under a rock, then you know the world has rediscovered a love for all things zombie. I think it was the highly successful television show, The Walking Dead, which helped the zombie make a comeback. I didn’t even know about this show until it was on for 2 1/2 years (I think I was living under a rock!) When I found out about it, I watched the first 2 1/2 seasons in 2 weeks. It’s THAT good. Even if you don’t care for zombies, the acting, storyline, and characters are wonderful.

Because I like anything zombie, I was also in a hurry to see World War Z. Zombies AND Brad Pitt? C’mon, you can’t go wrong. This movie’s been out for a while but if you haven’t had a chance to catch it, please make sure you do. The zombies in this film were some of the fastest moving ones I’ve ever seen! My boyfriend and I had a laugh about that!

So while that movie is cleverly titled World War Z, my post is just as cleverly titled: World War D. What’s the D stand for? Deodorant….the search for an effective natural deodorant has been the bane of many people’s existence. Mine included. There’s SO many natural deodorants out there that claim to work and after spending $10-$20, we embarrassingly discover the opposite is true. I’ve had this happen. In a truck. With my boyfriend. And him saying, “What is that smell?” And me opening the window and saying…”I don’t know.” Actually, I did admit to my funk. I have a strong funk, even though I do routine detoxes and shower almost daily [kidding.] Some of us just have more body odor than others. Can you relate?

So with this in mind, I decided to let the all natural deodorants I have tried battle it out! Which one will come out victorious? Read on to find out…

Natural Deodorants Stink

One of the main objections I hear from people is that natural deodorants don’t work because they’re natural. Many women, even though they’ve gone organic in most aspects of their lives, continue to cling to their “Secret Clinical Strength.” They feel they need pharmaceutical grade ingredients to stop them from smelling. This is so not true. Effective natural deodorants DO exist. You just have to do the legwork (which I’ve already done for you.) Another belief is that natural deodorants are too expensive. In fact, I just saw someone on Facebook complaining about this. My motto is, pay now or pay later. I’d rather pay a bit more for a natural deodorant now than a lot in serious health problems later.

Another important thing about natural deodorants- they don’t stop you from sweating. This is a GOOD thing. Sweating is your body’s way of detoxing. Commercial antiperspirants contain aluminum, which blocks your sweat glands…thereby blocking you from detoxing. We don’t like this.

If you’re buying natural deodorant already, you may think you’re safe. Nope…just because it says “natural” on the label doesn’t mean diddly squat. Tom’s Deodorant claims to be natural and contains propylene glycol- the same main ingredient of motor oil. Yummy!

So the main thing to remember when choosing a natural deodorant that’s effective is to read the ingredients. The second thing is to read my reviews below of what I have deemed the winner(s) of World War D.

[Also, please keep in mind that everybody's body chemistry is different- what works for me, may not work for you.]

World War D (eodorant)

 all natural deodorants

The following deodorants are rated on a scale of 1-10 (arm)pits- 10 being the best

  • Miessence Tahitian Breeze- 0 pits

I had to pull this one out of the oldie but goodie files. I used this deodorant about 4 years ago and brought it on a trip to New York with me. It was the only deodorant I had brought. Big mistake. Not only was I stinky linky, but I had some sort of sensitivity to the essential oils and broke out in a rash under my arms. While I love the Miessence brand, this just didn’t work for me.

Pros- Umm none….

Cons- Did not keep the stink monster away, gave me a rash

  • Nourish- 3 pits

This got 3 pits (and not zero) simply because of the scent- it’s divine! Almond vanilla has got to be one of my all time favorite scent combinations. As lovely as it smells, this deodorant did not work on me at all. A few hours after application, it was stink city for me.

Pros- Fab scent, in deodorant stick form, super ingredients like coconut oil and shea butter

Cons- I was stinkin’ up the joint a few hours after applying

  • Primal Pit Paste- 4 pits

I was super excited to discover this line! They’re made by some really awesome people. Unfortunately, they didn’t work with my body chemistry, but many Facebook fans rave about PPP.

Pros- Super pure ingredients like organic lavender, organic lemongrass and coconut oil, comes as a deodorant stick or paste (obviously, duh!)

Cons- Smelly pits resulted for me after a few days of use

  • Pit Putty – 5 pits

Some people swear by Pit Putty, made by one of my favorite USDA organic brands, Bubble and Bee. Unfortunately, none of them are effective on me in the long term. The AWESOME thing about Bubble and Bee is that they will send you another variety if the one you ordered didn’t work for you. So it’s kind of like no risk buying.

Pros- Comes in different scents & strengths, available as deodorant sticks or paste, satisfaction that you’re buying from a female owned indie brand, their deodorant guarantee

Cons- all the varieties I used didn’t hold up to the Florida heat

  • Phresh- 8 pits

I was pleasantly surprised by this deodorant after discovering it in the June Goodebox. The format is like a conventional deodorant stick, which is cool. The reason I gave it an 8 is because when I used it primarily in the day, I got a tiny bit stinky. But I find that if I use it at night, it keeps me pretty phresh (heehee.)

Pros: Great ingredients such as aloe juice, silica, Lycium Barbarum fruit extract (not really sure what this is, but sure sounds good- JUST KIDDING- it originates from the goji, goji berry or wolfberry plant!)

-Deodorant stick format

-Comes in great scents (I used the Tropical Blossom- but it also comes in Barely Sweet, Creme Brulee, Unscented, and Sugar Mint)

Cons- Not as effective on me during the day as night

The stick came loose out of the package after 1 month of use

  • Real Purity- 10 pits

After trying a multitude of natural deodorants, I came across this one. It’s pretty much the only deodorant I’d bet the farm on. Let’s just put it this way- if I was stuck on a desert island, I’d bring this and only this. It has all natural ingredients and is formulated to not only keep you smelling great, but helping your pits stay healthy. I’ve been using it successfully for over 5 years.

Pros- natural ingredients, including aloe, olive leaf extract, and sandalwood essential oil

-scent is not overbearing, in fact undetectable

-very effective (even in 90+ South Florida weather)

- great for sensitive skin

- liquid roll on formula, so you can use it to the last drop!

Cons- NONE

So when it comes down to it, Real Purity is the victor in World War D- the battle of the natural deodorants.

Were you surprised? Perhaps not if you’re a regular reader of my blog, because I have raved about this product before.

I’m sure you’ve tried 536 natural deodorants too.

Have you found one that wins the war against stinkiness for you? If not, give my top pick a try. I’m sure you’ll love it!

Stay natural…stay beautiful…go green!
